Coastdaleparks has been presented with four Gold Awards for 2013 from the
David Bellamy Award.

How are the awards judged?
The parks that take part in the scheme are all regularly assessed by the scheme’s team of local wildlife experts. The assessors look at the steps parks are taking to:
    • Manage their land as a haven for wildlife
    • Reduce their use of energy, water and other resources
    • Reduce, reuse and recycle the waste they produce
    • Support their local communities
David Bellamy uses the assessors’ reports (and any comments received from members of the public) to make his awards each year. Three levels of excellence can be achieved: Gold, Silver and Bronze.

What will an award winning park be like?
Amongst the award winners you’ll find a wide range of parks: From peaceful, hideaway places, where you’ll be able to enjoy a real ‘back-to-nature’ holiday experience; to larger ‘leisure parks’, where you and your family will be able to enjoy more facilities, along with the knowledge that the park you’re visiting is committed to environmental excellence.

Whichever one you choose you can pat yourself on the back, safe in the knowledge that you’ve made a greener choice – and that you’ll have a holiday full of natural enjoyment.

A bit of history

The David Bellamy Conservation Award Scheme is one of the longest running green tourism awards in the UK. The idea of the scheme was first sown when David Bellamy gave a talk to members of the camping, caravanning and holiday home park industry in which he gave the audience members a challenge to be part of the environmental solution and not part of the problem.

David was then invited to visit many parks and was amazed at the wide range of work that the most forward-thinking owners were doing for the environment. David was so impressed that a partnership was formed between the Conservation Foundation (the environmental organisation that David co-founded to help businesses get involved in conservation) and the British Holiday & Home Parks Association to set up an award scheme.

The scheme proper started with a pilot programme in 1996 and the first awards were made in 1997. As is the case today, assessors for the scheme were drawn from local wildlife trusts and other local conservation bodies. The idea behind the awards has also remained the same since those early days: to celebrate what the best parks are doing for the British countryside and to encourage others to follow their lead. “One of the first comments David made about the scheme remains true today: “My dream is to upgrade all caravan parks up to some sort of conservation status so that they can educate the visiting public and help them respect and care for the countryside.”

In the years since it was set up, the David Bellamy Conservation Awards scheme has grown in scope and stature and has even inspired similar award schemes abroad – most notable the Gumnut award scheme in Australia which plays a similar role in that country’s camping and caravanning world. The scheme has developed organically, but saw a major revision of its judging criteria in 2007/8. This was done to acknowledge the increasing importance of sustainability issues such as energy saving on both the industry, public and governmental agendas. With more and more businesses realising that being green is something that is well worth doing, the future of the scheme looks set to be as exciting and innovative as its past.

  • Our guide to doing the 50 things on the Yorkshire Coast

50 Things To Do Before You're 11 And Three Quarters
For tips on how to get better at these adventures, play a few games and find out how to win a special explorer medal check out our new 50 things website.
So what are you waiting for? Get out there and start ticking the 50 things off. It sounds like so much fun even our Ranger team are having a go.
  • No 1. Climb a tree

A man sitting in a tree © Gareth Wilson
Hayburn Wyke is our top spot for tree climbing on the Yorkshire Coast. Try to find a tree with big sturdy braches and get climbing.
  • No 2. Roll down a really big hill

A person rolling down a hill © Wayne Appleton
Find a nice grassy slope to roll down like Kate did. It's best to avoid places with thistles and nettles growing.
  • No 5. Skim a stone

A man skimming a stone © Kate Phillips
Chris is our expert stone skimmer. He recommends heading to the beach on a day when the waves aren't too big so you can get lots of bounces.
  • No 12. Hunt for treasure on the beach

A man digging in the sand © Kate Phillips
Chris might not have the best treasure hunting technique. Try looking in the strand line to see what you can find.
  • No 17. Set up a snail race

People watching snails on a wall © Gareth Wilson
Look under stones and logs to find your champion racing snails. Make sure you give them plenty of encouragement once they're off.
  • No 18. Balance on a fallen tree

A man balancing on a fallen tree © Chris Wood
Find a nice big fallen tree like Gareth and see how long you can keep your balance for.

A woman standing on a rock © Chris Wood
There aren't too many islands on the Yorkshire Coast, so you might have to use your imagination like Kate did.
  • No 24. Feel like you're flying in the wind

A man jumping in the air © Chris Wood
The Yorkshire Coast has some of the highest sea cliffs in England so there's always plenty of wind about. Don't fly too close to the edge though.
  • No 25. Make a grass trumpet

Making a grass trumpet © Gareth Wilson
It's easy to make a grass trumpet. All you need is a nice big blade of grass and plenty of puff.
  • No 26. Hunt for fossils and bones

Hunting for fossils and bones © Gareth Wilson
The Yorkshire Coast is famous for its fossils. It's not too hard to find fossil remains on the beaches all the way along the coast, but our favourite spot for a good hunt is Port Mulgrave.
  • No 29. Get behind a waterfall

A man standing under a waterfall
Hayburn Wyke is well known for its waterfall. You might have to be prepared to get a bit wet if you want to try and get behind it though.
  • No 37. Check out the crazy creatures in a rock pool

A man looking in a rock pool © Kate Phillips
There are loads of great places to go rock pooling on the Yorkshire Coast. Try Robin Hood's Bay, Saltburn or Boggle Hole.
  • No 39. Catch a crab

a small crab on a hand © Kate Phillips
While you're checking out those crazy creatures, see if you can catch a crab. Remember to keep your fingers away from the pincers. Do you think you can find a bigger one than Kate did?
  • No 49. Find a geocache

Finding a geocache © Gareth Wilson
There are loads of geocaches hidden along the coast, so it's a great place to try out this exciting hobby for the first time. There are some tough ones to keep experienced geocachers like Gareth entertained too.
